Ski Lutsen

Our new winter ski trip tradition began with the Paulson's in March 2012. We were looking for a winter diversion to replace the Pinewood Derby project weekend (no longer needed since both both boys have moved up to Boy Scout troop now) with friends Mark and John Paulson from Duluth. Mark had recently begun skiing with John, Derek had been learning to snowboard, and Jordan really wanted to try skiing so with the mild 2012 winter breathing it's last breath, we squeezed a weekend into our crazy schedules. Our trip to Lutsen will hopefully be the start of a new annual tradition!

Happy New Year! January 1-4, 2020 - Caribou Highlands condo 519. temps in the upper 20's with a 25-30" base. Lisa, Jordan, Derek and Erin. Erin's first Lutsen trip learining to snowboard. Mark and John came up wednesday night and Rothbergs joined the fun on thursday. Dinner all 9 of us at Moguls on Thursday. Friday night featured a rousing game of cards against humanity with the Paulson's,

Return to Lutsen - March 30 - April 2, 2018 - After skipping 2017 we decided to use the shortened Delano HS Spring Break to stay in the Haverstock condo in Caribou Highlands and enjoy 4 days of spring skiing. Temps were perfect, lows in the singles, highs in mid 20's all runs were open, plenty of snow. Mark and John joined us for the day on Easter Sunday.

Year 5 - COLORADO 2016! Changed plans to go ski with Aunt Sherri at Copper Mountain over spring break. Reserved VRBO rental condo at Copper Mountain Plaza #320 (right at base of hill over Endo's restaraunt. Drove to Lincoln NE on Saturday 3/19/16, finished trip to Genessee on Sunday. Drive to Copper Mtn on Monday morning with 4 days of lift tickets purchased from the condo owner. Groomers Monday and Tuesday, fresh snow on Wednesday! Returned to Lincoln on friday 3/25, home saturday 3/26..

Year 4 - Lutsen Mountain February 13-17, 2015. Coldest Valentines day in 70 years! Air temps well below zero with wind chills into the -35F range! We returned to Babu's for the President's Day holiday weekend, this time with Mike, Lori, and Jake Bauer. The lifts were running so we bundled up and skiied! Lutsen staff reported some 700 cancellations, evidenced by the empty parking lots at the condos and uncrowded slopes. We were able to ski most of the day Saturday in spite of wind gusts so strong that the wind would bring us to a halt as we came over the rise on the bridge run. Wind gusts kept the gondola closed so we spent our time on Eagle and Uhler. Sunday still around zero but no wind so we spent most of the day on Moose mountain enjoying the longer runs. Monday was a high of about 6 with very light snow and almost no wind. Mike made his famous spaghetti for Valentines day dinner and treated us to dinner at Coho's on Sunday. Breakfasts were belgium waffles on Sunday and eggs / sausage on Monday. Good thing we brought our personal chef (Mike) this weekend! We definately earned our hearty outdoor Minnesotan merit badge for skiing all 3 days this trip!

Year 3 - Lutsen Mountain February 14-18, 2014 (Presidents Day weekend). Whitetails visit Babu's, Lisa's a pro, Never follow the crazy kids! All 6 of us staying at Babu's (Dick McFarland's Condo) purchased in a United Way Auction, Norwood Shores east 14-D. Arrived late on Friday (Valentines Day) after a close call with a deer just south of Beaver Bay and got settled in. Breakfast of custard filled bismarks from our stop at Hinckley and off to the ski hill. Saturday started out as cool and snowy, light all day snow, high in the mid teens. Sunday colder but sunny high aound 9 F. Monday - Presidents Day all day snow totaling about 7" - Great fun but hard on the adult's tired legs. Tuesday was sunny, calm high around 30 - perfect way to end our trip. Only negatives were Mark was ill all 4 days with a cold and headache + his Toyota got stuck in the driveway 2 separate times due to the snow. Derek reinjures MCL on Monday afternoon, had to sit out a couple hours, was able to board on Tuesday with a little pain. Saturday night we made our traditional visit to Coho cafe for pasta compliments of the Paulsons. 4 deer bedded down for the day in the deep snow under the big pines on the lakeside of the condo on Sunday morning. Derek made his now famous chili for dinner Sunday night. Brad decided to see where John, Jordan and Derek were skiing by following them down the black diamond runs on Eagle - big mistake! Lisa made a nice 3 point landing at the bottom of Moose Mtn near the new high speed lift in 3' deep powder, nothing but skiis and poles were visible.

Year 2 - Lutsen Mountain March 2-3, 2013. Condo on the hill, Lisa holds a yard sale, Mark Plunges! Arrived late Friday (about 9pm). This year we decided to bring Lisa and to stay at the Hill in the Caribou Highlands complex. Spencers stayed in a privately owned efficiency condo rental #106A and Mark & John stayed in the hotel building. Condo had a full kitchen and wood burning fireplace so that became the gathering place for breakfast and saturday lunch. Dinner Saturday at Moguls restaurant compliments of Mark, Sunday lunch at the Lodge on top of Moose Mountain.

Derek snowboarded all weekend, Jordan did great on her new K2 twin tip skis. Lisa took a private lesson on Saturday afternoon and by Sunday was skiing the blues on Moose. Mark is skiing as well as I can ever recall and John took lessons both days, well on his way towards learning to slalom. Lisa's big crash on Uhler taught her the value of wearing a helmet, Mark almost made it all the way down the Plunge (almost...). Nice weather, single digit mornings, high 20's in the afternoon, very little wind, no fresh snow but good groomed base, sunshine most of the time.

Year 1 - Lutsen Mountain March 10-11, 2012. Sunburn. The arrowhead region had fresh snow on the preceding weekend so Mark booked a couple of hotel rooms at the Tofte AmericInn for Saturday night. Derek had a wrestling tournament on Friday night so we left for Lutsen at 3:00am on Saturday. Stopping only for breakfast at Judy's in Two Harbors, we arrived at Lutsen at 8:00am with the Paulsons right behind us. Derek brought his snowboard but all the ski equipment needed was rented at the mountain. Mountain Rangers level one 2 hour lesson for Jordan and level three 2 hour lessons for Derek and John began at 9:45 giving Dad time to ski Uhler (bunny hills) and find out if he could still get down the hill alive after taking the last 33 years off (last skiing outing for me was in spring 1978 at Spirit Mountain).

Beautiful conditions Saturday morning with calm winds and temps in the 20's. Cloudless skies both days made us wish we had brought sunscreen! By noon the temps had risen above the freezing mark and the heavy coats became an unwelcome accessory. The kids became more confident with every run and soon were exploring the many runs at Lutsen. Lunch in the main Chalet and then we skied until they shut off the lifts. Back to AmericInn for some pool / hot tub time, and showers before heading over to Coho Cafe for pasta! Sunday was even warmer and sunnier than Saturday so we transferred our lift tickets from our jackets and by the end of the day we were skiing in shirtsleeves. Derek spent the beginning and end of Sunday snowboarding swtching to skiing in the early afternoon. By the end of the weekend all three kids could now claim to have skied the black diamond runs on Eagle Mountain..............
