Path to Eagle

Derek joined Scouting in 1st grade as a Cub Scout with Delano Pack 3273 (Den 9) eventually earning his Arrow of Light in March 2011. He then crossed over to the Delano Boy Scout Troop 273 (Crow River District, Northern Star Council) and quickly advanced. Along the way he attended summer camps at Tomahawk (2011), Many Point (2012, 2013, 2014), 2013 National Jamboree at SBR in West Virginia, and Philmont 10 day (2014).

2015 - Florida Seabase (Florida Keys) July 3-10 with Mom as a Parent / leader. Last merit badge for Eagle, Citizenship in the Community completed in May 2015 with Mr. Gruba. Eagle papers submitted to Council on June 29. 2015. Eagle Board of Review was held at 7:30pm Wednesday August 26, 2015 at Delano United Methodist Church with Board members present: Dr. Steven Heil (DHS Principal), Mike Bauer (owner Bauer Design Build), Garry Hellmich (General Mills, Troop Committee Chairman), Kurt Eickschen (Crow River District), Geoff Gruba (Hennepin County, Troop Committee), Vicky Knop (Troop Committee. Advancement Chair) . Eagle Court of Honor November 22, 2015 at Independence City Hall.

Eagle Project - Bat & Helmet racks for every Ballfield in Delano (all 13 of them) + 3 youth fields in Loretto. Idea originated after seeing useful but badly weathered wood racks at Kimball H.S. during a fall softball tournament. Several different small prototypes and designs later the racks, to be made from PVC and Trex decking were born. Presented concept and non-scale prototype to the Delano Youth Baseball Softball Association (DYBSA) on November 9, 2013. Board liked the idea, and set 12/15/13 DYBSA board meeting to review actual product, project costs, and vote to support project. Bill Peterson signs as Benefactor (President DYBSA) following presentation on 12/15/13 at Delano Fire Station and commits to donate the first $500 + cover project overages. 12/16/13 presentation to Mike Lindquist, Delano Schools Athletics Director. 12/16/13 Scoutmaster (Dave Potter) approved project application. 12/18/13 presentation to Delano Parks & Recreation Committee, Committee voted to approve and permit, but on 1/22/14 the committee declined to donate funds. Application signed by Troop Advancement Chair Brenda Dalbec on 12/19/13. 1/14/14 presentation to Delano Lions Club, 7am at Jukebox. Lions voted to support project with a contribution of $500. Presentation to Delano Knights of Columbus / Frank Muckenhirn 2/10/14 at 6:15pm. K of C voted to contribute $500 on 2/18/14. Fastenal selected to provide the tamper resistant screws. Materials ordered from Menards (Buffalo) on 3/11, wrong length boards delivered 3/13, corrected delivery 3/14. cut boards to size with volunteer Pete Steingas 3/15 at Westwood Cabinets. 1st Scout worksession Sat. 3/22 11-3 at Independence City Hall to cut PVC pegs and glue on caps - David G., Nathan and Alex Moe. 4/13 assembled bat racks (David G, Nathan and Alex M., Grant H). First 2 bat & helmet racks installed on Field #10 for final design check and DYBSA approval. 5/3 glue helmet racks and secure with 3" screws (Alex and Grant). Installation fields 11, Dike, Zitzloff 5/9/14, Installation fields 5,6,7, 4-plex + extra helmet rack for Coach Schramel on Zitzloff 5/10/14 (Alex & Nathan Moe, Grant Hellmich). 5/23 install bat racks on Loretto youth fields with Jessie Converse and Herb Koch. 6/3 installed racks on new fencing at field 9, added extra helmet rack on Zitsloff in 2nd dugout, 1 rack in Home dugout at Main field. Visitors dugout needs shorter rack. Dad cut one down to 8 bats which was subsequently installed. Final presentation / meeting with DYBSA to present bill for overage and recap project Sunday September 14, 2014.






2014 - Philmont in July, Many Point in August. Positions of Responsibility: Bugler through April 2014. Merit Badges earned Camping (2/9/14), Cooking (8/16/14), Kayaking (8/16/14). Order of the Arrow Brotherhood in October 2014 at the Crow River conclave at Stearns.



2013 - In April awarded Life Scout rank, last step before Eagle after only 2 years in the Troop! Summer camp Many Point in August. National Jamboree July 12-25, 2013 at Summit Bechtel Reserve, Mount Hope, West Virginia. Positions of responsibility: Troop Webmaster thru Oct., Bugler from Oct - mar 2014 . Merit Badges earned: Communication (5/11/13), Climbing (8/16/13), Emergency Preparedness (8/16/13), Personal Fitness (12/19/13). Voted to OA at Many Point, OA Conclave (Ordeal - forgot sleeping bag!) at Stearns 10/11-12, 2013.



2012 - Star rank 3/03/12. Bugler 4/23/12 - 10/15/12, Troop Webmaster 4/23/11-10/23/12. Merit Badges earned: Citizenship in the Nation 2/14/12, Family Life 1/25/12, First Aid 7/27/12, Personal Management 9/17/12, Rifle Shooting 9/24/12. Many Point Summer camp (Ten Chiefs).

2011 - Scout rank 4/11/11, Tenderfoot 8/23/11, Second Class 10/18/11, First Class 10/18/11. patrol Leader 4/22/11-10/11/11, troop webmaster 4/22/11-4/23/12. Merit Badges earned: Environmental Science 8/19/11, Fishing 6/18/11, Fingerprinting 11/19/11, Geocaching 10/11/11, Leatherwork 8/19/11, Space Exploration 8/17/11, Swimming 8/19/11. Tomahawk Summer camp.


2010-11 Webelo II. Brian Schaust Den 9 Leader. Highlight of year Paintball

Crossover Ceremony at Baker near Wilderness 3/15/11. Earned Arrow of Light, Super Achiever award (all 20 Webelo activity pins). All but 1 of the Order of the Arrow team reserved for the ceremony failed to show so substituted Dave Potter as Akela and Boy Scouts played the other supporting roles.


2009-10 Webelo. den 9 Dad moved to Cubmaster, Brian Schaust served as Den leader, Highlight of year Go-carts.


2008-09 Bear. den 9 Dad served as Den leader, Dan Cady as Asst.



2007-08 Wolf

2006-07 Bobcat / Tiger. den 9 Dad served as Den leader, Dan Cady as Asst.
